Biography

Nicholas Perry Clark (b. 1993 in Portland, OR) is a young composer and bassoonist from Rainier, OR. He has had works performed by many musicians in Portland, OR, including chamber ensembles within the Oregon Symphony, multiple choirs and instrumental ensembles in the northwest Oregon and southwest Washington area, as well as collegiate ensembles in Austin, TX. He began composing at age fourteen and has since composed, arranged, conducted, and directed for various mediums and ensembles. He is currently studying composition with Yevgeniy Sharlat at The University of Texas at Austin and conducting with Peter Bay. His former composition teachers include Evan Kuhlmann, Jonathan Newman, and Dan Welcher. He has recently participated in master classes with renowned composers including John Corigliano, Jake Heggie, David Dzubay, Stephen Montague, Donnacha Dennehy, Anna Clyne, and members of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). In 2015, he attended Brevard Summer Music Festival, where he worked with composers Robert Aldridge and David Dzubay. Nicholas aspires to be a conductor and composer but truly wishes to extend these roles to become an artistic visionary and a community leader. For this reason, he is a lover of film, theatre, and art in addition to music, and enjoys these mediums when he is not working on his music or studying the music of others.

He is currently a year away from finishing his Bachelor's degree at The University of Texas at Austin where he has had much success conducting and gathering players for large works. He conducts the Engineering Chamber Ochestra's Full Orchestra and Early/Contemporary Ensemble and founded the Lab Orchestra at UT. Nicholas is also a dedicated bassoonist and previously a member of Kristin Wolfe Jensen's studio. He has performed with the UT Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Symphony Band, University Orchestra, and New Music Ensemble. He plans on graduating in Spring 2017 and has applied to graduate programs this semester for composition and conducting.
